Day 5 – He Leads Me

He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake. Ps 23:3

You will often hear Christians talking about their walk with God. Very simply put, this refers to their progress in the Christian life. It includes the ideas of direction, speed and destination. The Bible uses the same analogy over and over. “Steps,” “path,” “run,” “walk, “road” and other related words are used to describe our growing relationship with God (ex. Ps 16:11, Heb 12:1-2, Eph 4:1, Isaiah 35:8).

In this verse, we see how God desires to lead us on the right paths – paths of righteousness.

Righteousness is a word that can mean a lot of different things to different people. But its basic sense is “right-standing” or even more simply, “being right.” So when God wants us to walk on the paths of righteousness, He wants us to take the right steps, at the right time, going in the right direction in our lives.

The key here is that He leads us. We may think we know what to do when it comes to directing our lives, but with our limited knowledge, it’s easy for us to make mistakes. On the other hand God, who is all-knowing, doesn’t make mistakes, and He knows what’s coming in the future. So when He leads us, we can walk in confidence.

How do we allow God to lead us? Proverbs 3:5-6helps us: Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths. Trusting in God and allowing Him to lead takes humility, but the rewards are great. When you’re faced with a big decision, take time to pray about it, read the Bible, and try to discern God’s leading. Find people around you who are spiritually mature and talk to them about it. These are great ways to lean on God for direction.

The last 4 words of this verse are huge. While God loves us and wants us to have full and profitable lives, He doesn’t just want this merely for our sake. This phrase helps us remember why we are here in the first place – for Him and His glory. A life that is directed by God brings Him glory and honour, and this should be our goal. And in the process, we will be blessed.
