The Gospel of Luke
Luke was a highly educated physician, a Gentile, and a skilled storyteller. The Gospel of Luke is just one of four different books that recount the Gospel of Jesus. While it is true that the Gospels all repeat the same basic story, one right after the other, each telling of the story is different, not in the facts presented, but in the perspective from which they are told.
In this six-week study, your group will have an opportunity to read through the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, the savior to whom all of the Old Testament prophecies pointed. Throughout the study, you will see that Jesus is indeed the messianic king, but He will reign over Israel by suffering. His actions usher in an upside down kingdom marked by self-giving love, and He challenges his disciples to follow His example and share in His ministry.
Week 1 - “Overview of Chapters 1 to 9 and an in-depth look at Chapters 1 & 2”
The first in a six-week journey through the Gospel of Luke.
We will begin by watching an overview video on the book of Luke, which breaks down the literary design of the book and its flow of thought. In Luke, Jesus carries the covenant story of God and Israel to its culmination and he announces the good news of God’s kingdom to the poor and the rich.
Then, we explore the amazing events surrounding the birth of Jesus. The humble conditions of his family and their low status in Israelite society foreshadow the upside-down nature of Jesus' kingdom.
Each group member is expected to read portions of Luke throughout the week before the next study.
Week 2 - “Chapters 3 to 9”
This week we will discuss what we learned in chapters 1 & 2.
Then to help us prepare for this weeks reading of chapters 3 to 9, we will watch Jesus launch his ministry of good news for the poor and how he brought together people from very diverse backgrounds to live together in peace.
Week 3 - “Overview of Chapters 10 to 24 and an in-depth look at Chapters 9 to 19”
It’s week three and we will have a chance to discuss what we read in chapters 3 to 9.
In the coming week, we will begin exploring the central portion of Luke’s writing. First, we will watch part two of the overview video on the book of Luke, which breaks down the literary design of the book and its flow of thought.
Then we’ll take an in-depth look at how Jesus continues his controversial announcement of good news for the poor during his long road-trip to Jerusalem, which increases conflict with Israel's religious leaders. This tension provides the setting for the famous parable of the Prodigal Son.
Week 4 - “Chapters 19 to 23”
This week we take a bit of time to discuss chapters 10 to 18.
Then we will turn our attention to this week’s reading - the final week of Jesus' life. In this video, we'll explore the Gospel of Luke chapters 19-23, and how it came about that the innocent Jesus ended up being executed as a revolutionary rebel against Rome.
Week 5 - “Chapter 24”
This week we will conclude Luke's epic portrait of Jesus of Nazareth. The disciples discover the empty tomb and eventually have their entire view of the world turned upside-down as they meet the risen Jesus. Luke shows how Jesus' kingdom of God mission to its climactic moment, and he sets the stage for its continuation in Luke's second volume, Acts.
Week 6 - “The Gospel of The Kingdom”
In our final week we will discuss Chapter 24 of the Gospel of Luke and also talk about Romans 15.
We will finish by watching this great video on the Gospel of the Kingdom. In this video, we trace the origins of the word "gospel" and how it ties the story of the Old Testament together with the story of Jesus and his announcement of God's kingdom. Jesus brought God's rule and reign to the world in a very upside-down way, which is the best news you could ask for.
