Day 7 - God is Holy

Isaiah 6:3  And one [angel] cried to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; The whole earth is full of His glory!”

This Scripture gives us a glimpse into the foundational part of God’s nature – He is Holy.

The word “holy” is a word full of religious connotation and mystery. What does it really mean? Very simply, holy means set apart, and it also implies purity. God is set apart – He is different – from the corrupt things of this world. He is not influenced by them, rather He is separate from them. He is pure light; there is no darkness in Him. He is perfect, and perfectly good.

This again, is part of the infinite nature of God. He is infinitely holy, pure and perfect. This is hard for us to fully grasp because there is nothing on earth that is perfectly…well perfectlyanything. When we talk about pure gold, the purest we can buy is a coin that is 99.999% pure gold. That may seem very pure, but it’s not perfect. If you had a ton of this pure gold, there would be a handful of dirt in it. Hmmm. So for us, even the purest substance is not really pure.

But God is different – He is perfectly pure and holy. There is not even a hint of a suggestion of sin or darkness. He is so perfect that we can’t come to him on our own merit. You may be a good person, but no one is good enough to stand before God. That’s why Jesus came – to take our sin, so we could be made holy in His eyes. This doesn’t mean we’re perfect in the same way He is, it just means He has done a spiritual work to make us innocent before Him – to give us this holiness spiritually. It’s awesome!

Only a holy God could do this. And we are thankful that He did. Let us remember as we journey through life that God is holy and perfect, and we have an intimate connection with Him through Jesus.
