Part 4 - Jesus Helps Us Pray (3)
“Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”
Although it may not seem so at first, this part is about allowing God to work in us and through us.
“Kingdom” means a realm of authority – a place where someone is the king. When Jesus walked on the earth, He said things like, “The Kingdom of God has come near you” (Luke 10:9). He could say this because He and the Father were so closely connected that the Father could work though Him perfectly. When Jesus went around healing people of their diseases, He was allowing the King to use His authority and power through Him – through Jesus.
In doing this, Jesus allowed God’s will to be done on the earth. You may ask, “Why didn’t God just do it on His own?” and that’s a good question. The answer is that God has always wanted to work through people. Looking at the Old Testament, we can see God calling specific people to speak for Him and to act for Him. Most often, these people were known as prophets. Isaiah and Daniel are examples of these.
In the New Testament, God was able to work though Jesus. And after Jesus was raised from the dead, He told His disciples to go and do what He had done because “All authority has been given to Me.” (Matt 28:18). Sure enough, God worked through Jesus’ disciples, and He can work through you, too. You simply have to allow Him to.
When you pray this phrase, you are asking Him to do just that.
