Day 4 - God is All-Knowing

Ps 147:5 Great is our Lord, and abundant in power; his understanding is beyond measure.

In the last few decades, computers have become more and more powerful, and research on artificial intelligence has yielded astounding results (just ask Siri).

We are passionate about increasing our knowledge, or at least our access to knowledge. This desire is normal – it’s actually built into us by God. He wants us to press toward higher levels in different areas of life, particularly spiritual areas (Phil 3:14).

But no matter how much knowledge we gain, no matter how much information we acquire, we will never come close to being all-knowing the way God is. In terms of intelligence, He is on a completely different plane. Not only does He know everything that each of us knows, He also knows everything we don’t know. As an example, on a physical level, He would know the exact status of the orbit of every electron in every atom in the universe at any given time (even though this information is “unknowable”).

But more importantly to us, He knows everything about every person in the world. He understands our needs, wants, accomplishments, fears, and intentions. He understands everything about what we love and what we hate. And even more, He understands why we love what we love and hate what we hate. He understands every thought and word that goes through our minds. Ps 139:1-6 makes this clear. Jesus reiterated this thought when He said that God even knows the number of hairs on our heads (Luke 12:7).

Although at first this may seem a bit off-putting, let’s remember that God is good. He only has good in store for His people, and He wants to do us good always. So He doesn’t ever use this knowledge against us – He uses it to help us.

Heb 4:13-16 shows us God’s heart in all of this. Since He knows all about us, and as a man, Jesus experienced everything we could ever go through, let’s be open to Him, and let’s intentionally be vulnerable to Him. This way, we can be strengthened by His grace as we need it.

And we need it!
